History
|
History is an elusive thing; yet, our entire present and future has been, is and will be guided by past historical events. The Holy Sprit has led the history from the beginning of Holland Road Baptist Church. In the August 1963 meeting of the Martha Haygood Circle of Kempsville Baptist Church a need was voiced for a mission in the County View Mobile Home Court area. The Circle voted to present the plan as a recommendation to the Church at its next business meeting. Having secured the sanction of the Women's Missionary Union, the speaker of the Martha Haygood Circle presented the following recommendation: "The Martha Haygood Circle of Kempsville Baptist Church recommends to the church from the Women's Missionary Union that we go on record in favor of starting a mission in the County View Mobile Court and adjacent area." The motion was made to accept the recommendation and seconded. The motion carried on September 4, 1963. During a meeting of the mission committee, the owners of County View Mobile Court offered the use of the recreation building in the County View Mobile Court as a meeting place for the mission. Kempsville Baptist Church provided a letter of appreciation to the owners of County Mobile Court thanking theme for the opportunity to start a mission in their court and for the use of the recreation building. The first meeting in the recreation building of the then County View Mission was held the last Sunday in November 1963. God had led so wonderfully through troubled and good times. It took much love, work and plain gut energy to prepare the hall for worship service each Sunday. However, things progressed beautifully. People were enlisted; they came, moved on carrying some of the mission spirit them, and others came to take their place, as County View Court was a transient community. Sixty-six people attended the first Sunday School Classes December 1, 1963, at the then County View Chapel. One week later, Herbert A. Lanier led 37 people in the first morning worship service. The first Christmas celebration was held in the Mission on December 22, 1963. On January 8, 1964, the mission congregation called Reverend Lanier to be their part-time pastor. The first communion service was held in the Mission the first Sunday in April 1964. The Virginia Wingo Circle of the mother church gave the communion clothes. The mother church gave the first two plates for the bread and the wine and three inactive deacons from the mother church served the communion and thereafter until the Mission ordained her own deacons some years later. The first Southern Baptists Women's Missionary Society of County View Mission met on January 30, 1964. There were eight present and all joined to form the first Women's Missionary Society of the mission. They were called the Grace Palmer Circle. Several from the mother church with officer's from the Kempsville Women's Mission Union explained the functions of Women's Mission Society and what part it played in the great organizations of Southern Baptist Missions, emphasizing that the first duty is to be training youth in and about missions. The organization has through the years, upheld the mission program by promoting the Lottie Moon week of prayer for home missions in March each year as the Ester offering. The mission gradually increased the youth program until today we have a fully qualified staff and the youth program for the following organizations: Acteens, Girls in Action, Mission Friends and Nursery. The first Bible School was held June 15 - 26, 1964 with Mr. Rocky Whitfield as superintendent. The commencement ceremony was held outside just at dusk with some 120 children, workers and visitors enjoying the beauty of what had been done for Christ in these eleven days. Out of the Bible School grew what was called "The R. M. Whitflield Workshop." A group of boys ages twelve to fourteen with whom Rocky taught the art of wood working and giving appreciation to the fact that our Jesus was a carpenter. Not only building with wood, but also with our lives. The first anniversary of the Mission was celebrated with a worship service and dinner on the grounds and a program in the afternoon on December 6, 1964. About seventy-five were present. This has been an annual celebration every year with increasing interest and attendance. In regular business session of Kempsville Baptist Church on December 8, 1965 a motion was made that Kempsville Baptist Church purchase for $55,000 and give as a gift to County View Mission, the property on Holland Road (now Euclid Road) as a site for a church chapel. The motion was seconded and carried. The first ground breaking for the first unit of our present Holland Road Baptist Church building was on the coldest day of February 20, 1966. The shovel used is on display in the foyer. The first meeting was held in the Chapel on June 5, 1966. This was a happy day in the life of the mission. After the first meeting in the new building on June 5, 1966, things moved fast and the congregation grew, lagged and grew again. Many came and many moved on as at the Mission. In 1968, Kempsville Baptist Church made a loan for Holland Road Chapel to add four classrooms and to buy equity in the parsonage. The parsonage was later sold in 1977. In a quarterly business meeting of Kempsville Baptist Church on July 12, 1972 a letter from Holland Road Chapel was read to the Mission Committee of Kempsville Baptist Church dated June 26, 1972: "Dear Sir: By action of the congregation in a regular business session on June 25, 1972, Kempsville Baptist Church is hereby petitioned by Holland Road Baptist Chapel to organize said Chapel into a constituted church. Holland Road Baptist Chapel further requests Kempsville Baptist Church to transfer all properties located at 4881 Holland Road (now Euclid Road) and those at 4929 Blackfoot Crescent and all obligations against said properties from Kempsville Baptist Church trustees to the trustees of Holland Road Baptist Church." The Deacons concurred with the request as set forth in the letter. A motion was made and carried from the Missions Committee of Kempsville Baptist Church to accept the request as set forth in the above letter. An amendment was made to the above motion that the constitution of the Chapel would legally become effective on September 30, 1972; this was seconded and carried. The Holland Road Baptist Church, 4881 Holland Road (now Euclid Road), Virginia Beach, Virginia was constituted and became legally effective on October 8, 1972. The seeds that were planted that caused the building of the Sanctuary coincided with the same day the Church was legally constituted, October 8, 1972, and the seeds continued to grow until the ground breaking for the new Sanctuary was held the evening of August 29, 1976. There were many meetings of all committees and the fact of Spirit led cooperation was wonderful. On Easter Sunday April 10, 1977, the church met for the first time in this our beautiful Sanctuary, giving thanks, praise and the glory to God for his blessings and recognizing the fact that the 'people' are the church, the building our place to gather together to worship, praise and have fellowship with the other. During the time we met in the first unit of the Chapel, baptizing was done in other churches. Kempsville Baptist Church, Thalia Lynn Baptist Church and Green Run Baptist Church graciously allowed us this privilege. It was a landmark in our history to have our own baptistery. Upon Pastor Lanier's retirement in 1991, the church, just a few months later called Reverend Pittman as pastor. There have been many firsts, which will be recorded, in the complete history of the Church. Space and time will not permit the recalling of them all or the many faithful members who have served in so many ways serving the Lord with gladness, praise and faithfulness. It is now time for the people of Holland Road Baptist Church to take another step to ensure the future growth of Holland Road Baptist Church's ministries; it is most likely that 2006 will be a "Touching-Tomorrow-Today year for the people of Holland Road Baptist Church. |
